As the vibrant autumn leaves began to fall, the Liberty University women’s basketball team are gearing up for the highly anticipated 2024-2025 season. Picked for a second-place conference finish by the CUSA head coaches, The Lady Flames are led by preseason all-conference performers Asia Boone, Emma Hess and Bella Smuda.
Asia Boone
A 5-8 sophomore guard from San Diego, Calif., Boone enjoyed a superb freshman season. She was voted CUSA Freshman of the Year, while also earning second team All-CUSA and CUSA All-Tournament Team accolades. She averaged 10.1 ppg and knocked down 63 three-pointers at a 36.8 percent clip.
Emma Hess
A 6-0 senior guard from Beavercreek, Ohio, Hess is part of the preseason all-conference squad for the second year in a row. She tallied 13.0 ppg last season, earning first team All-CUSA recognition. Hess shattered the Liberty single-season record with 76 three-pointers, shooting 39 percent from beyond the arc.
Bella Smuda
A 6-6 redshirt senior center from Exton, Pa., Smuda was not only voted to the preseason All-CUSA squad but also became the Lady Flames' first-ever Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award Preseason Watch List member.
Smuda's 2023-24 campaign saw her collect first team All-CUSA, CUSA All-Defensive Team and CUSA All-Tournament Team awards. She led the Lady Flames in points (15.0 ppg), rebounds (10.0 rpg), blocked shots (2.3 bpg), field goal percentage (58.5) and double doubles (18) a year ago.
First up: Total Athlete Tip-Off
Liberty tips off its 2024-25 season on Monday Nov. 4 at 1:00 p.m. in the Athletes in Action first ever three game Total Athlete Tip-Off at the new John Wooden Family Fieldhouse in Xenia, Ohio. Starting the day in game 1 of 3, The Lady Flames square off against Valparaiso University Beacons. The second game features the men’s Liberty University Flames squad (5:00p) to take on the men’s Valparaiso University Beacons, while Indiana State University Sycamores vs. the Florida Atlantic University Owls finish the night in a game three men’s contest.
Coming Soon: 11th Ranked Duke Blue Devils Head to Lynchburg
Following the opener, the team returns to the friendly confines of Liberty Arena for a potentially electrifying home matchup against Duke on Thursday November 7th at 7:00p.m. Entering their fifth season playing at Liberty Arena where there is a distinct home court advantage, Liberty has posted an 86% home winning record of 52-8. Liberty and Duke have all the anticipation of a must-see matchup: an 11th-ranked team sporting Duke on their jersey, facing off against a solid Liberty squad known for defending its home court. With The Lady Flames driven to prove themselves against a storied program, fans can be part of this electrifying atmosphere.
