The Rotary Club of Forest spearheaded the Field of Honor®, while the Military Order of the World Wars joined with an informational table to honor veterans and families.
Traffic along Graves Mill Road has been greeted by a breathtaking sight this fall as the Rotary Club of Forest posts 1,200 United States flags across the grassy field in front of Automated Conveyor Systems. This stirring “sea of red, white, and blue” brings the annual Field of Honor® to Lynchburg’s foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The inaugural display united organizers, volunteers, and visitors in a moving tribute to health care heroes, victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, first responders, and the military & veterans who have risked everything to protect our freedoms.
Each flag in this living panorama honors men and women who have served—and continue to serve—our nation around the globe. As the number of surviving World War II veterans dwindles, and decades pass since the wars in Korea and Vietnam, we are reminded too of those who have fought in the Middle East since the attacks of September 11, 2001. The fall of the Twin Towers showed us the immense sacrifices of first responders, who, like our military, run toward danger to keep us safe.
This powerful display is more than flags in a field. It is a community expression of gratitude, honoring all who have worn the uniform, all who have rushed into danger, and all who have given of themselves to defend and protect us.
Catch it before the last day of September 19th at Automated Conveyor Systems at 6 Millrace Dr.
