Caitlyn Baxter Shoots Career-Best 67; Liberty Christian Completes Opening-Week Sweep

Amherst County senior wins her second tournament in four days while the LCA Bulldogs capture the John Scott Memorial team championship at London Downs. Read all about it in the Baird Financial Group Greater Lynchburg High School Golf Report

Amherst County's Caitlyn Baxter and Liberty Christian Academy completed perfect opening weeks Thursday at the John Scott Memorial at London Downs Golf Club.

Baxter followed her victory at the Raider Invitational with a career-best 5-under-par 67 to capture her second individual championship in four days.

The Amherst County senior and William & Mary commit finished two shots ahead of Halifax County's Owen Mason, who shot a 3-under 69. Baxter's round was five shots better than her winning 70 at Falling River Country Club and gave her a 7-under total through her first 36 competitive holes of the season.

Liberty Christian was just as impressive in the team competition. The Bulldogs placed four golfers at 76 or better to shoot a 7-over 295 and win the 14-team tournament by 15 shots.

LCA's victory followed its championship at the Raider Invitational, giving the Bulldogs two team titles in two starts.

Baxter Goes Even Lower

Baxter entered Thursday already holding one trophy after shooting a 2-under 70 to win the Raider Invitational.

At London Downs, she lowered that score by three shots.

After opening with a bogey on the par-4 ninth hole, Baxter quickly responded with an eagle on the par-5 11th and went on to shoot a career-best 67.

The round earned Baxter her third John Scott Memorial championship and continued a remarkable start to her senior season.

Through two tournaments, Baxter has rounds of 70 and 67, two victories and a 36-hole total of 137 — 7-under par.

Liberty Christian Takes Second Straight Team Title

Liberty Christian followed its seven-shot victory at the Raider Invitational with an even more convincing performance at London Downs.

Tanner Hesse led the Bulldogs with an even-par 72, good for third individually. Matthew Stephens was one shot back with a 73, Logan Walker shot 74 and Dylan Maddox finished with a 76.

Those four rounds produced a team score of 295, 15 shots better than runner-up Halifax County at 310.

Baylor Ritter added a 79 that wasn't needed for LCA's team score, meaning each of the Bulldogs' top five golfers broke 80.

The performance also represented a 14-shot improvement from LCA's winning 309 at Falling River earlier in the week.

E.C. Glass finished third with a 316, followed by Appomattox County at 325 and Jefferson Forest at 328.

E.C. Glass Takes Third

E.C. Glass turned in one of the day's strongest performances among Greater Lynchburg teams.

Nikko Guanzon led the Hilltoppers with a 2-over 74, while Preston Laughon followed with a 76.

John Sorenson shot 82 and Addie Ruhl added an 84 to give E.C. Glass a four-player total of 316.

That put the Hilltoppers six shots behind runner-up Halifax County and nine shots ahead of fourth-place Appomattox.

How Others Fared at London Downs

Appomattox County finished fourth at 325 behind a 78 from Coleman Almond and 79 from Gage Evans. Carter Boehmer shot 83 and Wesley Glover added an 85.

Jefferson Forest placed fifth at 328, led by another strong round from Conner Lamanna. After shooting an even-par 72 at the Raider Invitational, Lamanna carded a 1-over 73 at London Downs. Will Carson shot 79, Angela Liu finished with an 87 and Collin Hamrick added an 89.

Amherst County finished seventh at 344 behind Baxter's tournament-winning 67. Willie Hurley shot 90, Griffin Seah finished at 93 and Tristan Ogden added a 94.

Brookville placed eighth at 347. Jackson Maschal led the Bees with an 80, followed by Caeth McAndrews at 84, J.P. Newman at 87 and Conner Dalton at 94.

Liberty High finished ninth with a 350. Jayce Macaioni led the Minutemen with a 3-over 75, followed by Jeb Stanley at 86, Cole Caron at 93 and Jax Boman at 96.

Rustburg finished 11th at 364, led by Landon Lewis with an 87. Carson Bryant shot 91, while C.J. Jones and Charlie Brooks each finished at 93.

Staunton River placed 12th at 375. Arrington Short led the Golden Eagles with an 87, Jacob Ray shot 92, Palmer Satterfield finished at 96 and Aden Harris added a 100.

Heritage finished 13th at 398. Kingston Crawford led the Pioneers with a 96, followed by Lucas Takacs at 99, Haven Manning at 100 and Grant Manning at 103.

⛳ Week in Review

The opening week of the Greater Lynchburg high school golf season belonged to Amherst County's Caitlyn Baxter and Liberty Christian Academy.

Baxter went 2-for-2, winning the Raider Invitational with a 2-under 70 before lowering her score to a career-best 5-under 67 at the John Scott Memorial. She finished the opening 36 holes of her senior season at 7-under par.

Liberty Christian matched Baxter's perfect start in the team competition. The Bulldogs won at Falling River with a 309 and then improved by 14 shots at London Downs, posting a 295 for their second championship in four days.

Jefferson Forest's Conner Lamanna also produced an impressive opening week, shooting 72 and 73 for a 145 total. LCA's Matthew Stephens posted rounds of 75 and 73, while Dylan Maddox shot 76 in both tournaments.

Liberty's Jayce Macaioni improved six shots between tournaments, going from an 81 at Falling River to a 3-over 75 at London Downs.

Four Early Trends to Watch

Two tournaments into the season, four early trends are emerging from the Raider Invitational and John Scott Memorial:

1. Caitlyn Baxter is putting on quite a show. The Amherst County senior has opened with rounds of 70 and 67, winning both tournaments. Her 68.5 scoring average is four shots better than the next-lowest average among golfers who competed in both events, while her 36-hole total of 137 is eight shots clear of the next-lowest total.
2. Liberty Christian has shown remarkable depth. Using the Bulldogs' four counting scores from each tournament, seven of LCA's eight scores were in the 70s. The only exception was an 81 at the Raider Invitational. The result: two tournaments and two team championships.
3. Don't overlook Conner Lamanna. The Jefferson Forest senior has quietly put together rounds of 72 and 73, giving him a 72.5 scoring average — second-lowest among golfers who competed in both tournaments.
4. Keep an eye on Matthew Stephens. The Liberty Christian sophomore has opened with rounds of 75 and 73. His 74.0 scoring average is the third-lowest among golfers who competed in both opening-week tournaments.

One Team, One Leaderboard

A quick note for readers new to Virginia high school golf: regular-season competition is co-ed. Boys and girls compete for the same school teams and appear together on the same tournament leaderboard.

That means Baxter 's 70 at Falling River and 67 at London Downs were the lowest scores in the entire field, making her post the overall lowest individual score at both events.

The postseason adds another layer, with golfers advancing through VHSL regional competition toward state championships based on school classification. The VHSL also offers a separate Girls Open postseason opportunity for female golfers. Lynchburg Agenda will take a closer look at how those postseason paths work as the season progresses.

⛳ Next on the Tee

With the season's two large opening-week tournaments complete, Greater Lynchburg teams move into the heart of the regular-season schedule.

Most upcoming competition will feature district matches, duals and smaller multi-team events rather than the large fields seen at the Raider Invitational and John Scott Memorial.
