Open Division Co-Leaders Nick Brediger and Lynchburg's Luke Libbey opened with four under par 67.

Anyone who plays golf, is married to a golfer, has a friend who is a golfer and those especially who play competitive golf understand golf is a game of DRAMA.
Before we get into the three players I followed, a quick peak at the leaderboard and those following Nick Brediger and Lynchburg's Luke Libbey opening 67's can be seen by clicking the live scoring and tee times at 2025 Fox Puss.
Day 1 at The Fox Puss Invitational
It doesn’t take long when you ask someone how they played they share a litany of what could have been, should have been or should not have been. For the three players I followed that is what I heard. Let's start with the super seniors.
Tim Kelley had an excellent round with a 74 and is tied with Boonsboro’s Bert Allen for 7th place in the super seniors at 3 over par. David Partridge, a former winner is in lead for the super seniors with a 2 under 69. Tim readily mentioned his three putts on 16 and 18 but didn’t talk about his 4 birdies on 5, 10, 13 and 14.

Luke Libbey is tied for the lead in the tournament with a 4 under 67. He told me about and shared a photo of his shot on the long par 3, 17 which showed his ball being less than an inch from the hole. I asked him if he had ever had a hole in one and he said, no. When I told him I have had 7 hole in ones, you could feel his despair and how badly he wanted that hole in one. When you can lead the Fox Puss on the first day, I think I could have my name on my golf bag as well.

Talon Dingledine, I caught up with late as he finished with an opening 77. Here is his exact text explaining his round specifically his double bogey 6 on hole 4, an extremely hard uphill hole:
“Overall, did not have my stuff today.
Didn’t drive the ball well and as we discussed on the phone, this course is tough when playing from the rough.
On 4 it was a shock for sure…I had 130 back up the hill and into the wind from the middle of the fairway. Hit a gap wedge (130 club) and caught a jumper from the fairway…flew 150, landed on the cart path, and went into the back woods near 5 tee. I declared lost when I got to the green and after replaying the shot, made par on the 2nd ball.
Overall, just couldn’t get much going on day one and excited for the next two and going to play well.”
Drama and optimism. This 18-year-old is already a seasoned golfer.

Talon is tied for 36th.
Leaders
Luke Libbey is tied for first place with Nick Brediger who also had a 67. Another Boonsboro member Jeb Burton V is tied for third with a 69. Like father like son Burton the 4th also was a good golfer at Boonsboro. I speculate the Jeb 1 – 3 could also play golf. All worked in the asphalt business like Jeb 4 and 5.
In the seniors Jeffrey Klatt is in first at one over par 72 and Jason Landes is the low Boonsboro member with a 75.
Difficult Day on the Greens
I heard of many 3 putts and even putting it off the 9th green if your ball ended up beyond the pin that was on the left front of the hole.
Camp Burton
The real story of day 1 is all the smiles and greetings shared with old friends on the first tee. Camp Burton has been involved with the Fox Puss since 1999 and has been the starter for the last 10 years. I asked him why he did it and he said it is all about seeing your friends that he greets with a smile and a warm genuine welcome. He wants to maintain the tradition of the Fox Puss and Boonsboro being a friendly place to play competitive golf and not be stuffy like other private clubs. I asked him why and how this culture started. He said “We started as a cocktail party in 1971 and today we are still a cocktail party but also a top golf event that draws the best players.
