The Central Virginia Health Department released inspection results for the first week of September, covering restaurants, schools, hotels, and mobile units across the region.
Clean Records
Several establishments earned a perfect report with zero violations, including:
- K&T’s Backyard BBQ (300 Pocahontas Dr)
- First Watch (8000 Timberlake Rd)
- Smokin Hogs with Logs Mobile Unit (Amherst)
Minor Violations
Routine inspections at locations such as Forest Middle School, Ma D’s Food Truck, and Fairfield Inn & Suites turned up just a single violation each, generally minor in nature.
Moderate Findings
A handful of eateries landed between two and four violations, including Joe Beans (2), Subway #4162 (3), Annie’s Indian Kitchen (3), Moore’s Country Store (4), Huddle House (4), and Waffle House #2124 (4).
Higher Counts
Two restaurants topped the list this cycle:
- Wasabi (3700 Candlers Mtn Rd) – 5 violations
- The Cavalier (2920 Rivermont Ave) – 6 violations
- Bruno’s Clubhouse Bistro (Huddleston) – 7 violations, the highest this week
Spotlight on Top Violations
Bruno’s Clubhouse Bistro – Huddleston
Bruno’s received seven violations in its September 4 routine inspection. Highlights included:
- Improper cold holding – Sausage in a prep unit was at 48°F; the unit was taken out of use until repaired.
- Incorrect date marking – Several foods, including chili, were mislabeled. Labels were corrected during the inspection.
- Unlabeled containers – Multiple bottles and containers lacked identification; all were labeled before inspectors left.
- Missing sanitizer test strips – Required for verifying dishwashing and sanitizing effectiveness; management pledged to purchase immediately.
- Sanitation issues – Mold-like buildup was found inside ice machines, and grime was noted under warewashing areas. Ice machines were cleaned on-site and staff committed to more frequent deep cleaning.
While these issues were notable, Bruno’s remained compliant in critical categories such as food sourcing, hygiene, and hot food temperatures.
The Cavalier – Rivermont Ave., Lynchburg
The Cavalier logged six violations on September 5, including:
- Sanitation at beverage stations – Soda dispenser nozzles had significant black buildup; cleaned during inspection.
- Cold holding concerns – Deli turkey and mac ‘n cheese in the combo fridge measured 43–45°F, above the safe 41°F threshold. The cooler was adjusted and monitoring protocols put in place.
- Unlabeled food containers – Several spices and sauces lacked identification.
- Improper cloth storage – Wiping cloths were left out instead of stored in sanitizer solution; corrected on site.
- Damaged cutting boards – Deep scoring and stains made them unsuitable for safe food contact; replacement or resurfacing was recommended.
- Restroom deficiency – No covered receptacle in the women’s restroom.
Inspectors noted improvements in organization and housekeeping since prior visits, along with management’s plan to update ServSafe certifications for staff.
Wasabi Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar – Lynchburg
Wasabi received five violations during its September 2 inspection. Key issues included:
- Employee health policy missing – Staff had not signed or acknowledged required illness-reporting policies; corrected with new forms during inspection.
- Time as a public health control – No written policy in place for sushi rice and batter. A log and disposal process was created on site to ensure food safety.
- Unlabeled containers – Several sauce bottles and spices lacked labels; corrected during inspection.
- Plumbing risk – A hose left connected at the utility sink without proper backflow protection was removed immediately.
- Facility maintenance issues – Broken tiles and missing light covers in the dish area require repair within 90 days.
Food handling, cooking temperatures, and sanitizer levels otherwise met health standards.
Follow-Ups
Several establishments were undergoing follow-up inspections, including La Carreta (Madison Heights), Pho Saigon Kitchen, Osaka Japanese Express, Shipley Do-Nut’s, and Papa Gallo. Follow-ups typically indicate prior issues are being checked for correction.
Other Notes
Duck Donuts who recently closed their business (3405 Candlers Mtn Rd) was inspected under the category “Other,” not part of a routine or follow-up cycle.
