Liberty University has long embraced a bold vision for its athletic programs—whether at the club level, NCAA Division I, or even intramural play. The schools over 50-year-old mission, “Training Champions for Christ,” was championed by founder Dr. Jerry Falwell Sr., who envisioned Liberty’s athletics becoming to evangelical Protestants what Notre Dame is to Catholics or Brigham Young is to Mormons. That commitment has taken shape through elite facilities and mentorship-driven coaching, where student-athletes are equipped to lead not just on the field, but in life.
Liberty University has emerged as a national contender in multiple sports, highlighted by its rapid rise in FBS football, where the Flames capped an undefeated 2023 regular season with a berth in the Fiesta Bowl—one of the prestigious New Year’s Six games—and previously earned back-to-back Cure Bowl wins, including a victory over #12 Coastal Carolina.
The school’s softball program is another example—led by two-time Olympic gold medalist Dot Richardson—stunning the nation recently by upsetting top-ranked Texas A&M in route to the program’s first NCAA Super Regionals appearance.
The men’s basketball program also made history in 2019 with its first NCAA Tournament win, upsetting #5 Mississippi State, and continues to be a consistent postseason threat under Coach Ritchie McKay.

While Liberty’s men’s golf program has quietly maintained an above-average track record, its new practice facility expansion could signal a turning point in national relevance. Local star golfer Luke Libbey—once considered one of the top high school golfers in Virginia holds a solid yet middle-tier stroke average on the team proving both the program’s rapidly rising talent level and its growing appeal among elite recruits.

With the added draw of a fully playable on-campus course, Liberty Golf could soon join the ranks of the school’s most impactful athletic programs.

Liberty Golf Expansion – The Details
In that same spirit of excellence, Liberty has completed the expansion of its golf practice facility off U.S. 501 on Lone Jack Road, just south of Lynchburg. The expanded site now includes a fully playable 18-hole course across six greens, stretching 7,940 yards, and adds 100 acres to the existing Clarkson Clubhouse and driving range—home to Liberty Golf since 2014.
The expansion reflects the program’s commitment to success. The program has won eight conference titles since 2011, qualified for 12 of the last 13 NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals, and made four trips to the NCAA Men’s Golf National Championship. It is a competitive record that continues to elevate Liberty’s national profile—and by extension, the city of Lynchburg.

Coach Thomas Reflects on Vision
Jeff Thomas, head coach of Liberty’s men’s golf team, spoke about the impact of the new facility:
“I thank God for everything he has done for this program and how he has blessed our players’ efforts and talents. We are extremely excited about the announcement of the new construction of the addition to our facility. When completed in its entirety, this practice area will give the Liberty golf program one of the best facilities in the nation. It will give our players every opportunity to develop into championship-level players and fill a need we were missing when it comes to competition game development”.

A Player’s Perspective
Ike Joy, a redshirt junior, believes the new facility signals Liberty’s intent to join the NCAA’s elite.

“If you’re coming to play golf, you’re going to be practicing 20-40 hours a week, have opportunities to play in high-level DI tournaments, to play in the best facilities you can, and that’s exactly what this course is going to be”.

Yet Joy shared that there’s a philosophy behind the program that goes deeper than winning golf championships, one that’s driven by the university’s mission of training the next generation of servant-hearted, Christian leaders. In particular, he made it clear that Coach Thomas is big on Liberty’s mission of “Training Champions for Christ”, and wants players to grow spiritually, socially, academically, as well as excel within their sport.

This mentality is also reinforced by broader activities unique to faith-based schools like Liberty that aren’t even directly related to golf, such as personal discipleship opportunities led by spiritual life leaders on university residence halls and getting to hear from nationally renowned speakers twice a week at the university’s convocation, which draws a crowd of nearly 10,000. Some convocation speakers are well–known athletic faces, such as ESPN analyst and college football hall of fame member David Pollack, who visited the university in the Fall of 2023.

Looking Ahead
With its upgraded facilities and holistic mission, Liberty’s men’s golf program is poised to become a top destination for both high school and transfer recruits seeking elite competition and deeper purpose. At the same time, these recruits gain something few schools can offer—direct mentorship from accomplished leaders who aim to shape the next class into tomorrow’s difference-makers. As one player put it, the expansion’s potential is “phenomenal”—not just for the program, but for the lives it will shape.
