Global Oil Markets Turn Volatile
Gas prices in the City of Lynchburg rose sharply over the past week, climbing 32 cents per gallon from $2.39 on March 2 to $2.71 as of Monday, March 9 at 3:25 p.m., according to GasBuddy.
Analysts say part of the increase may be tied to rising global oil prices following the tensions in the Middle East. Crude oil prices moved above $100 per barrel in recent days as conflict involving Iran raised concerns about disruptions to global energy supplies and shipping routes. While local pump prices are influenced by many factors, international oil markets often ripple through to U.S. gasoline prices within days.
Despite the increase, Lynchburg still compares favorably with several larger Virginia markets, where prices remain noticeably higher.
Across the immediate region, Roanoke reported one of the lowest averages at $2.73, while Richmond came in at $2.85 and Danville at $2.89. Prices climbed closer to the $3 mark in Charlottesville ($2.99) and Alexandria ($3.04).
Within the Greater Lynchburg area, prices varied widely by locality:
- Amherst: $3.19
- Rustburg: $3.17
- Appomattox: $3.15
- Bedford: $2.99
Even with the week-to-week jump, Lynchburg continues to rank among the lower-priced fuel markets in Virginia, particularly when compared with Northern Virginia and parts of Central Virginia where prices remain above $3 per gallon.
GasBuddy’s pricing is based on real-time, user-reported data from individual stations, providing a snapshot of current market conditions rather than a full-day average.
