Middle East Dust Up's Historically Increase Oil and Gas Prices
Gas prices in the City of Lynchburg edged slightly higher over the past week, rising 2 cents per gallon from $2.37 last Monday (Feb. 23) to $2.39 as of Monday, March 2 at 3:10 p.m., according to GasBuddy.
For now, the increase is modest. But global events could quickly change that trajectory.
Following joint U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iran, energy analysts are warning that escalating tensions in the Middle East — a region critical to global oil supply — could trigger a short-term spike in crude oil and gasoline prices.
“Every time we've had flare-ups in the Middle East like we're seeing right now — and we've seen this kind of situation periodically over the last 50 years — it has caused significant disruption to energy markets,” economist Stephen Moore told Fox News Digital. “I would expect we could see anywhere from 25 to 50 cents a gallon increase in gas prices in the short term.”
Despite the potential volatility, Lynchburg remains one of the lower-priced fuel markets in Virginia.
The current $2.39 per gallon price was reported approximately four hours prior at the Wawa station on Wards Road — presently the lowest publicly reported price in the city. The next lowest price observed was $2.47 at two additional Lynchburg-area stations, reinforcing a competitive local spread even amid broader uncertainty.
As always, Lynchburg Agenda captures pricing at a specific moment in time each Monday afternoon to avoid mid-week fluctuations and provide a consistent weekly comparison.

The Pump Prices We Benchmark
GasBuddy provides real-time, user-reported station prices, city and ZIP comparisons, proximity filters, price trend charts, and regional cycle tracking.
For Lynchburg Agenda consistency, we record pump prices at a specific time each Monday (3:10 p.m.) in each market to maintain reliable week-over-week comparisons.
We intentionally avoid full-day averages because they blend price swings across 24 hours, which can dilute real-time changes and mask short-term spikes. By capturing prices at the same time each week — and avoiding mid-week (Wednesday–Friday) volatility — we provide Greater Lynchburg readers with a clearer, apples-to-apples snapshot of what drivers are actually seeing at the pump.
