Central Virginia Food Establishment Inspections: October 14–18, 2025
The Central Virginia Health District released its latest food safety inspection reports for restaurants, schools, and mobile food units across the region. Most facilities passed with strong marks for cleanliness and proper food handling, while a few recorded moderate or higher violations that required immediate correction.
Perfect Scores
Several establishments and school cafeterias earned perfect inspections with zero violations, including:
Five Guys (4026 Wards Road), Tru by Hilton (650 Simons Run), Phillin Philly Mobile (2100 12th St), Raven Wood Fired Pizza (149 Oak Tr), and Boonies (383 Addie Way).
All were found in full compliance with sanitation and temperature standards.
Minor to Moderate Violations
Inspections showing one to five violations included:
- Huddleston Elementary (Huddleston) – 1 violation
- Kona Ice (Montvale) – 2 violations
- Moneta Elementary (Moneta) – 3 violations
- Brookneal Munch (409 Lusardi Dr) – 3 violations
- Guggenheimer Health (1902 Grace St) – 4 violations
- Stewartsville Elementary (Goodview) – 5 violations
Most of these involved labeling, temperature monitoring, or storage issues that were corrected during inspection.
Higher Violation Totals
The highest counts this week came from:
- Rosa Negra (Altavista) – 6 violations
- Pino’s Pizza (231 Lusardi Dr) – 7 violations
- Golden Corral (4005 Wards Road) – 10 violations
- JT’s Grill (4154 S. Amherst Highway, Madison Heights) – 11 violations
Inspectors cited these establishments primarily for improper food storage, temperature control, and equipment sanitation. Each will undergo follow-up inspections to ensure full compliance.
Golden Corral (4005 Wards Road, Lynchburg)
The Golden Corral buffet in Lynchburg recorded 10 violations during its October 16 routine inspection, several of which were repeat issues.
Inspectors found that the restaurant’s dishwasher was not reaching proper sanitizing temperatures, showing readings below the required 180°F final rinse. Management called for immediate service and switched to a three-compartment sink for chemical sanitizing until repairs are made.
Temperature control and labeling were also major concerns. Foods including cooked beans, taco meat, and breaded okra were found above 45°F and lacked proper cooling or date labeling. Those items were discarded on-site, and employees were retrained on proper cooling procedures such as stirring and using shallow containers during the first two hours.
Additional violations included unlabeled cooked foods in the walk-in, boxes of food stored on the floor, and gloves stored near a mop sink. Structural issues were also noted — cracked floor tiles, wall gaps, and slow-draining sinks — all requiring repair within 90 days.
Golden Corral was advised to maintain proper sanitation records, ensure equipment is tested with heat tapes, and replace worn filters and seals to prevent pest activity. A follow-up inspection will verify corrections.
JT’s Grill (4154 S. Amherst Highway, Madison Heights)
JT’s Grill recorded the highest violation count of the week — 11 total — during its October 15 inspection.
The most significant issue was a dishwasher sanitizer concentration far below the required level, reading only 10 PPM chlorine (safe range: 50–100 PPM). The restaurant was instructed to manually wash, rinse, and sanitize all dishware until a new sanitizer solution is obtained.
Inspectors also observed black buildup inside the ice machine, expired food products (including beer cheese dated October 5 and canned tomatoes past their best-by date), and cooling and thawing violations such as tightly sealed hot foods and vacuum-packaged salmon thawing improperly.
Additional citations included employees wearing jewelry while cooking, discolored or damaged food containers, and heavily scratched cutting boards needing replacement. The kitchen also showed grease buildup beneath fryers, small holes in walls and baseboards, and a light out inside a cooler, all of which must be corrected promptly.
Despite these findings, inspectors noted positive practices — proper separation of raw and ready-to-eat foods and overall good managerial oversight. JT’s Grill is expected to correct all violations before a follow-up inspection in the coming weeks.
Follow-Ups and Pre-Opening Inspections
- Subway #4162 (2154 Wards Road), Truss Restaurant (2204 Bedford Ave), and La Patrona (20 Sunny Bank Dr) underwent follow-up inspections.
- Mi Patron (3412-T Waterlick) and Daybreak Coffee (Brookneal) were inspected for “other” purposes such as layout or equipment review.
- Vincent Van Gogh Café (1208 Perrowville Rd), Amherst County High School (Amherst), and 7 Day Quick Mart (102 Paulette Cir) all completed pre-opening inspections prior to serving customers.
