(Bedford, VA)—The Bedford County Department of Social Services (DSS) is staffing a SNAP Information Hotline next week to support citizens who will be affected by upcoming changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
The hotline will operate from November 3-7, 2025, between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day. Residents may call 540-586-7750 to speak with DSS staff who can answer questions, provide guidance, and help connect residents to local food and community resources as needed.
These efforts follow the federal government shutdown that began on October 1, which has temporarily halted the distribution of November SNAP benefits from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. To ensure continued support for Virginia families, Gov. Youngkin’s office announced the Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance Initiative (VENA) on October 28.
Through VENA, current SNAP recipients (as of October 29, 2025) will receive weekly, state-funded payments on their electronic benefits transfer (EBT) cards. For example, a household that typically receives $200 per month will now receive $50 each week. The day a SNAP recipient receives their benefits may also change through this initiative.
“We understand this transition may be confusing and could create challenges for families who rely on SNAP benefits,” said Andy Crawford, Director of Bedford County Social Services. “Our goal is to make this process as smooth as possible by being accessible, answering questions, and connecting residents with food resources if needed.”
Local residents are also encouraged to visit the Bedford Area Resource Council website for a list of area food banks.
