Amherst County's Caitlyn Baxter shoots 8-under par at Hidden Valley Country Club, while E.C. Glass golfers Preston Laughon and Nikko Guanzon also advance.
Amherst County's Caitlyn Baxter delivered the round of the high school season Monday, firing an 8-under-par 63 at Hidden Valley Country Club to earn medalist honors and advance from the competitive Region 4D South sub-regional.
Baxter went out in 30 and came home in 33, recording nine birdies, eight pars and just one bogey over 18 holes. The round established a women's course record from the black tees at Hidden Valley, according to information provided by Amherst coach Gary Addison and Robert Baxter.
Caitlyn capped the performance in dramatic fashion, sinking a 35-foot birdie putt on No. 18 for her ninth birdie of the day.
The depth of the Region 4D South field made Baxter's performance even more impressive. Five golfers' broke par and 12 shot 73 or better, while only two teams and four individuals from non-qualifying teams advanced.
Against this field, Baxter didn't merely earn a qualifying spot. Her 63 was six shots better than the next-lowest score by a golfer from a non-advancing team and earned her sub-regional medalist honors.
E.C. Glass shot 296 — an average of 74 from its four counting scores — and still finished six shots outside a team qualifying position. Jefferson Forest's Connor Lamanna, one of the Seminole District's most consistent golfers throughout the season, shot 73 and did not advance.
For Glass, the 296 included Laughon's 69, Guanzon's 71, Bax Wolanski's 76 and Addie Ruhl's 80 as the four counting scores.
Baxter wasn't the only Greater Lynchburg golfer to advance. E.C. Glass's Preston Laughon shot 69 and teammate Nikko Guanzon shot 71, earning two of the other individual qualifying positions. Halifax County's Owen Mason shot 70 to claim the remaining individual spot.
Other familiar Seminole District golfers also competed in the deep Region 4D South field. Lamanna teammates Will Carson and Eric Sprinkle each shot 79 and all Seminole District team and individual scores can be found in the Baird Private Wealth Management Scoreboard below.
Blacksburg and Salem claimed the two team advancement positions. Blacksburg shot 289, one stroke ahead of Salem's 290. E.C. Glass was next at 296, followed by Halifax County at 301 and Jefferson Forest at 316.
Baxter's performance also adds another chapter to an impressive season. She was among the area's early-season leaders with rounds of 67 and 70 before E.C. Glass's Nikko Guanzon emerged as the Seminole District's dominant golfer during the middle and latter portions of the regular season. On Monday, paired in the same group with Guanzon, Baxter produced her best round yet as postseason play began.
The Region 4D South sub-regional included eight schools: Amherst County, Blacksburg, E.C. Glass, George Washington-Danville, Halifax County, Jefferson Forest, Mecklenburg County and Salem.

Post Season
The postseason picture is beginning to come into sharper focus as teams move from Seminole District competition into their respective VHSL classifications and regions. Additional schedules, qualifying information and results will be added to the High School Golf Report as they become available this week.
In Region 4D South, Blacksburg and Salem advanced as teams from Monday's sub-regional at Hidden Valley Country Club. Three Greater Lynchburg golfers also advanced individually: Amherst County's Caitlyn Baxter and E.C. Glass's Preston Laughon and Nikko Guanzon. Halifax County's Owen Mason earned the other individual qualifying position.
Liberty-Bedford advances to regional competition following its third-place finish at Tuscarora Country Club. Additional information on the Minutemen's regional tournament, including the site, date and qualifying format, will be added as it becomes available.
According to the VHSL, there is some discretion on the sub regionals format by region. Once regional play begins, qualifiers become consistent across the state. In 3C sub regional at London Downs, Seminole District teams LCA and Brookville advance with six at large individuals moving on to the next event. Those include Rustburg's C.J. Jones, Mark Dalton, Landon Lewis, Carson Bryant, Charlie Brooks and Heritage's Haven Manning
Lynchburg Agenda will continue to follow those teams and individuals as regional competition unfolds.
State Tournaments
The VHSL state championships will be played Oct. 12-14:
Class 2 — Oct. 12: Hobbs Hole Golf Course, Tappahannock
Class 4 — Oct. 12: Cutalong at Tributer, Mineral
Class 1 — Oct. 13: Hobbs Hole Golf Course, Tappahannock
Class 3 — Oct. 13: Cutalong at Tributer, Mineral
Class 6 — Oct. 13: Bristow Manor, Bristow
Class 5 — Oct. 14: Bristow Manor, Bristow
Each state championship is an 18-hole stroke-play event.
Girls Open Championship
Zone qualifiers: Oct. 19-20 at local sites
Open Championship: Oct. 26 at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg
