Liberty High Golf Earns Long-Awaited Trip to Regionals

The Minutemen finish third at Tuscarora Country Club to advance as a team, led by Jayce Macaioni's 81.

Liberty-Bedford's golf season will continue after the Minutemen finished third in their postseason qualifier at Tuscarora Country Club, earning a team berth in regional competition.

Liberty posted a 365, securing what coach Hank Whitehouse said is the program's first trip to regionals as a team in many years.

Jayce Macaioni led the Minutemen with an 81, the second-lowest individual score of the tournament. Macaioni has been Liberty's leading golfer throughout much of the Seminole District season and delivered again with the team's season on the line.

Tripper May shot 90, followed by Cole Caron at 96 and Jax Bomar at 98. Those four scores accounted for Liberty's 365 team total. Marlon Creasy shot 113 and Jeb Stanley 116.

The regional berth gives Liberty High an opportunity to extend a season in which the Minutemen competed throughout the fall against a deep Seminole District that included E.C. Glass, Jefferson Forest, Liberty Christian Academy, Amherst County, Brookville, Rustburg and Heritage.

The postseason picture is beginning to come into sharper focus as teams move from Seminole District competition into their respective VHSL classifications and regions. Additional schedules, qualifying information and results will be added to the High School Golf Report as they become available this week.

In Region 4D South, Blacksburg and Salem advanced as teams from Monday's sub-regional at Hidden Valley Country Club. Three Greater Lynchburg golfers also advanced individually: Amherst County's Caitlyn Baxter and E.C. Glass's Preston Laughon and Nikko Guanzon. Halifax County's Owen Mason earned the other individual qualifying position.

Liberty-Bedford advances to regional competition following its third-place finish at Tuscarora Country Club. Additional information on the Minutemen's regional tournament, including the site, date and qualifying format, will be added as it becomes available.

According to the VHSL, there is some discretion on the sub regionals format by region. Once regional play begins, qualifiers become consistent across the state. In 3C sub regional at London Downs, Seminole District teams LCA and Brookville advance with six at large individuals moving on to the next event. Those include Rustburg's C.J. Jones, Mark Dalton, Landon Lewis, Carson Bryant, Charlie Brooks and Heritage's Haven Manning

Lynchburg Agenda will continue to follow those teams and individuals as regional competition unfolds.

State Tournaments

The VHSL state championships will be played Oct. 12-14:

Class 2 — Oct. 12: Hobbs Hole Golf Course, Tappahannock
Class 4 — Oct. 12: Cutalong at Tributer, Mineral
Class 1 — Oct. 13: Hobbs Hole Golf Course, Tappahannock
Class 3 — Oct. 13: Cutalong at Tributer, Mineral
Class 6 — Oct. 13: Bristow Manor, Bristow
Class 5 — Oct. 14: Bristow Manor, Bristow

Each state championship is an 18-hole stroke-play event.

Girls Open Championship

Zone qualifiers: Oct. 19-20 at local sites
Open Championship: Oct. 26 at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg
