Central Virginia Community College Seeking Muralist to Bring Art to Bedford Hall Library

 Lynchburg, VA — Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) is inviting applications from accomplished muralists to create a large-scale mural in the CVCC Bedford Hall Library. The selected artist will enhance approximately 520 square feet across five connected drywall surfaces above library furniture. Compensation will be provided by the CVCC Educational Foundation through a generous donation supporting public art on campus.

Project Vision & Parameters

The final design must be dynamic and engaging; suitable for all ages; respectful to all communities; and non-political, non-religious, and non-commercial (aside from subtle CVCC branding, if applicable). Paint (rolled or brushed) on drywall is required. Paint on other media and surfaces, such as baseboards, door frames, or signage, is not permitted. The project is student- and community-centered, and the library will remain open to visitors during painting.

Eligibility

• Open to individual artists or teams with demonstrated mural design and painting experience (as shown in application materials).
• Preference will be given to artists who reside in Virginia.
• Up to three candidates may be invited to create one preliminary design each (more may be submitted if desired) inspired by campus-generated ideas and to present their concepts to a mural team. Invited candidates who complete at least one preliminary design and the interview/presentation will receive a $500 design fee upon completion of a W-9.

Timeline

• September 15, 2025: Call issued; application opens
• October 19, 2025 (11:59 p.m. EST): Application deadline
• October 20-31, 2025: Application review & candidate selections
• November 1-12, 2025: Preliminary designs & presentations
• Beginning November 13, 2025: Final muralist selection; design revisions & approvals
• Schedule TBD: Mural painting & mural dedication event
