3405 Candlers Mountain Road, Lynchburg | Oct. 19
Inspectors documented four violations involving food labeling, wiping cloth storage, utensil handling and employee belongings.
A container apparently holding flour was incorrectly labeled as white rice. A wet wiping cloth was left on a preparation table rather than stored in sanitizer. Ice cream scoops were held in standing water at 109°F, below the required 135°F for that storage method.
Inspectors also found a purse resting on a box of food and other personal belongings stored among food items.
All four violations were corrected during the inspection. The inspector also noted satisfactory food temperatures and date-marking practices.
Ray's Burgers & Grill — 4 Violations
1202 Bethany Church Circle, Forest | Oct. 16
Inspectors found raw hamburger patties stored above onions, lettuce and packaged coleslaw, creating a potential cross-contamination risk. The ready-to-eat foods were relocated during the inspection.
Chili measured 43°F, while ham and hot dogs measured 44°F in a refrigerator, above the required cold-holding maximum of 41°F. The operator closed the refrigerator door to allow temperatures to decrease and agreed to monitor the food.
The establishment also lacked an employee with a current Certified Food Protection Manager credential. An employee with supervisory responsibilities was directed to obtain certification within 90 days.
A water heater beneath the three-compartment sink was beginning to rust and leaking slowly. Repairs or replacement were required within 90 days.
Two violations were marked corrected on-site.
Ferguson Family Provisions — 3 Violations
1273 Paradise Haven Trail, Blue Ridge | Oct. 16
Inspectors found macaroni salad and coleslaw at 44°F, above the required 41°F cold-holding maximum. The foods were moved toward the back of the refrigerator, where other items were holding at acceptable temperatures.
A sanitizer spray bottle tested above 500 parts per million. Water was added, bringing the concentration to 400 ppm.
Inspectors also found leaks at the water pump and handwashing sink drain, with repairs required within 90 days.
Two violations were marked corrected on-site.
Other Establishments with Violations
Butts-Up Bar-B-Que Mobile Unit — 2 Violations
466 Sunset Drive, Concord | Oct. 19
Inspectors found that the mobile unit used water from a private residential well without documentation of the required annual nitrate and total coliform testing. Test results were requested by Oct. 29.
Inspectors also observed a black mildew-like substance around the freshwater inlet components and particulates inside the inlet pipe. The operator was directed to flush and sanitize the water system before its next use. The unit was not operating during the inspection.
El Gordo's Kitchen — 1 Violation
17980 Forest Road, Suite D, Forest | Oct. 18
Inspectors found the mobile unit's wastewater tank full and leaking onto the pavement through an overflow pipe. The operator emptied the tank before resuming operation and was directed to permanently cap or remove the overflow pipe within three days.
Teachable Moments Preschool — 1 Violation
1915 Thomson Drive, Lynchburg | Oct. 15
Disposable foil pans were stored inside a kitchen handwashing sink, obstructing its use. The chef removed the pans during the inspection, correcting the violation. The inspector described the kitchen as generally neat and organized.
The Mingo Coffee Co. — 1 Violation
21700 Timberlake Road, Lynchburg | Oct. 14
