Guanzon Fires 33 as E.C. Glass Wins at Colonial Hills

Guanzon became a six-time winner as Seminole District teams are in their final week of play before regional competition begins.

E.C. Glass continued its strong September run Monday, posting a 146 to win a four-team match at Colonial Hills Golf Club by five shots over Jefferson Forest.

Nikko Guanzon led the Hilltoppers and earned medalist honors with a 33, the low round of the match. Preston Laughon and Bax Wolanski each added 37s, while John Sorenson's 39 completed Glass' four-player total.

A dominant season to date: Guanzon has been the dominant golfer over the course of the Seminole District season. Caitlyn Baxter provided some of the season's early fireworks, highlighted by rounds of 67 and 70, while Connor Lamanna remained a regular presence near the top of the leaderboard and collected wins of his own. Sophomore Matthew Stephens emerged as one of the leaders of an LCA team that was arguably the district's deepest. As the district season progressed, however, Guanzon separated himself with a remarkable run of six victories and two runner-up finishes over an eight-tournament stretch.

Jefferson Forest finished Colonial Hills in second place at 151 behind another strong performance from Connor Lamanna, who shot 35. Angela Liu turned in her lowest reported nine-hole round of the season with a 36, while Will Carson added a 39.

Amherst County's Caitlyn Baxter continued her stellar season with a 35, tying Lamanna for second individually.

Liberty-Bedford finished third at 175, led by Jayce Macaioni's 38. Amherst County finished fourth at 188.

Brookville, Heritage, LCA and Rustburg are scheduled to compete Wednesday, Sept. 23, at London Downs Golf Club in the final Seminole District match of the season.

Post Season

Regional tournament competition begins Monday, Sept. 28, with regional events to be completed by Tuesday, Oct. 6. Regional tournaments may consist of 18 or 36 holes, with sites and pairings determined by each region.

The region champion and runner-up, along with the top three individuals not on either qualifying team, advance to the VHSL state tournament.

The VHSL state championships will be played Oct. 12-14:

Class 2 — Oct. 12: Hobbs Hole Golf Course, Tappahannock
Class 4 — Oct. 12: Cutalong at Tributer, Mineral
Class 1 — Oct. 13: Hobbs Hole Golf Course, Tappahannock
Class 3 — Oct. 13: Cutalong at Tributer, Mineral
Class 6 — Oct. 13: Bristow Manor, Bristow
Class 5 — Oct. 14: Bristow Manor, Bristow

Each state championship is an 18-hole stroke-play event.

Girls Open Championship

Zone qualifiers: Oct. 19-20 at local sites
Open Championship: Oct. 26 at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg
