Where Are They Now?

Former LCA running back Gideon Davidson rushes for a career-high 105 yards, while E.C. Glass graduate Eli Wood continues a strong start at Utah State.

Former Liberty Christian Academy running back Gideon Davidson delivered a big performance this weekend among former Greater Lynchburg high school football players now competing at the college level.

Davidson, a sophomore at Clemson, rushed for a career-high 105 yards on 16 carries and scored his first collegiate touchdown Saturday as the Tigers rallied for a 28-20 victory over North Carolina.

The performance was the first 100-yard rushing game of Davidson's college career. His 10-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter put Clemson ahead during its comeback victory.

Through three games this season, Davidson has rushed 37 times for 187 yards and a touchdown, averaging 5.1 yards per carry. He rushed for 260 yards as a freshman in 2025.

Former E.C. Glass receiver Eli Wood is also off to a strong start in his first season at Utah State. Wood caught four passes for 47 yards Saturday against Utah and has started all three games for the Aggies. Through three games, he has 16 receptions for 190 yards and two touchdowns, including a 90-yard performance against Idaho State in the season opener.

Wood arrived at Utah State after four seasons at Virginia, where he appeared in 35 games and finished with 19 receptions for 220 yards and two touchdowns. His best season came in 2025, when he caught 16 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns, including a late 18-yard touchdown against Duke in the ACC Championship Game that forced overtime. He followed that with four catches for 71 yards against Missouri in the Gator Bowl.

Davidson and Wood are among a number of former area players continuing their football careers at the college level.

Liberty Christian Academy

Gideon Davidson — Clemson

Position: Running back
Class: Sophomore
Season: 37 carries, 187 yards, 1 TD

Davidson rushed 16 times for a career-high 105 yards and a touchdown in Clemson's 28-20 victory over North Carolina. He averaged 6.6 yards per carry and scored on a 10-yard fourth-quarter run.

The performance was the first 100-yard rushing game of Davidson's college career and continued the progression of one of the most accomplished high school players in Virginia history. At Liberty Christian Academy, Davidson rushed for more than 7,700 career yards, second-most in Virginia High School League history, and scored a VHSL-record 122 touchdowns. He helped lead the Bulldogs to the 2024 Class 3 state championship, capping his senior season with a 42-6 victory over Kettle Run, and was named the 2024 Gatorade Virginia Football Player of the Year and Football Friday Player of the Year.

Jayden Cowart — Elon

Position: Defensive back
Class: Freshman

Cowart is in his first season at Elon after a four-year varsity career at Liberty Christian Academy. A team captain and two-time state champion with the Bulldogs, Cowart contributed on both sides of the ball, finishing his LCA career with 85 tackles and four interceptions on defense while rushing for 2,700 yards and 29 touchdowns.

Cowart also earned two varsity letters in track and field at LCA.

Austin Tremblay — Liberty

Position: Defensive line
Class: Freshman

Tremblay remained close to home after a decorated career at Liberty Christian Academy and is a freshman defensive lineman at Liberty.

A three-year varsity starter, Tremblay helped LCA win back-to-back state championships in 2023 and 2024. As a senior, he was named the Bulldogs' 2025 season MVP and earned all-district, all-region and all-state honors at defensive end.

Tremblay also played tight end at LCA and competed in basketball, track and field and wrestling.

Dillon Stowers — Army

Position: Defensive line
Class: Senior

Stowers started on Army's defensive line against Bryant on Sept. 5 and tied for the team lead with five tackles, including three solo stops, while recording a sack.

The senior appeared in 11 games for Army last season, recording 17 tackles. He had four tackles against Navy and later recorded a pass breakup against UConn in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl.

At Liberty Christian Academy, Stowers played linebacker and tight end and finished his career with more than 300 tackles, 18 touchdowns, five interceptions and 10 forced fumbles. He earned all-state honors at both linebacker and tight end before attending the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School in 2022.

E.C. Glass

Eli Wood — Utah State

Position: Wide receiver
Class: Graduate student
Season: 16 receptions, 190 yards, 2 TDs

Wood has started all three games in his first season at Utah State and has quickly become a significant part of the Aggies' passing game.

The former E.C. Glass and UVA receiver caught four passes for 47 yards Saturday against Utah. He opened the season with six catches for 90 yards and a touchdown against Idaho State, then added six receptions for 53 yards and a touchdown against Washington.

Through three games, Wood has 16 receptions for 190 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 63.3 receiving yards per game.

Wood transferred to Utah State after four seasons at Virginia. At E.C. Glass, he caught 50 passes for 1,020 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior, earning Seminole District Player of the Year and VHSL Class 4 first-team all-state honors.

Lyvarius Gilbert — Virginia Union

Position: Wide receiver
Class: Redshirt junior

Gilbert is a redshirt junior wide receiver at Virginia Union after graduating from E.C. Glass in 2023.

A multi-sport athlete at Glass, Gilbert played wide receiver and free safety and also contributed as a punt returner. He joined Virginia Union in 2023 and has developed into a receiving target for the Panthers.

The Roanoke native is pursuing a degree in health sciences at Virginia Union.

Lincoln Funke — Christopher Newport

Position: Tight end
Class: Freshman

Funke is a freshman tight end at Christopher Newport after graduating from E.C. Glass.

He earned all-region and all-district honors as a senior in 2025 and served as a team captain. During his career at Glass, Funke helped the Hilltoppers win two district championships and a region title.

Funke is majoring in business at Christopher Newport.

Brookville

Jor'dyn Whitelaw — William & Mary

Position: Running back
Class: Sophomore

Whitelaw appeared in all 12 games for William & Mary in 2025, primarily as a kick returner. He returned 25 kickoffs for 510 yards, averaging 20.3 yards per return, and added 44 rushing yards on 14 carries.

At Brookville, Whitelaw was a team captain and two-time first-team all-district selection. He rushed for 1,119 yards and nine touchdowns and finished with 1,567 all-purpose yards and 10 touchdowns.

Whitelaw has twice earned CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll recognition.

Trevor Johns — Hampden-Sydney

Position: Wide receiver
Class: Redshirt freshman

Johns is a redshirt freshman wide receiver at Hampden-Sydney after playing at Brookville.

Heritage

Bre'Andre Horsley — UNC Pembroke

Position: Defensive line
Class: Senior

Horsley transferred to UNC Pembroke after three seasons at West Liberty, where he developed into an all-conference defensive lineman.

The former Heritage standout earned first-team All-Mountain East Conference honors in 2025, recording 61 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks and two fumble recoveries in 10 games.

Over three seasons at West Liberty, Horsley totaled 102 tackles, eight sacks and 18.5 tackles for loss. He also recorded two interceptions, three pass breakups and three forced fumbles.

At Heritage, Horsley earned first-team all-district honors as a senior.

David Bradley — Christopher Newport

Position: Running back
Class: Freshman

Bradley is a freshman running back at Christopher Newport after a standout career at Heritage. He is currently listed on the Captains' roster as injured.

At Heritage, Bradley was a two-time first-team all-district selection at both running back and linebacker and earned second-team all-region honors at linebacker. He also competed in track and field.

Jefferson Forest

Logan Candis — Norfolk State

Position: Defensive line
Class: Redshirt freshman

Candis is a 6-foot-3, 345-pound redshirt freshman defensive lineman at Norfolk State after playing at Jefferson Forest.

Camerohn Parker — Hampden-Sydney

Position: Defensive back
Class: Sophomore

Parker is in his second season at Hampden-Sydney after appearing in seven games as a freshman in 2025. He recorded five tackles, including three solo stops, with a career-high four tackles against Averett.

The former Jefferson Forest defensive back earned all-district honors as a senior in 2023. He also played basketball at Jefferson Forest.

Alexander Marsteller — Rose-Hulman

Position: Running back
Class: Senior

Marsteller is a senior running back at Rose-Hulman after a breakout junior season in 2025.

The former Jefferson Forest player rushed for 579 yards and five touchdowns in eight games, averaging 5.4 yards per carry and 72.4 rushing yards per game. He also caught 14 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown, giving him 697 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns.

Marsteller earned honorable mention All-HCAC honors and was named Academic All-HCAC in 2025. He is majoring in civil engineering.

Spencer Sloan — Johns Hopkins

Position: Tight end
Class: Freshman

Sloan is a freshman tight end at Johns Hopkins. The former Jefferson Forest player is listed at 6-foot-6 and 240 pounds.

Rustburg

Avery Dixon — Charleston Southern

Position: Safety
Class: Redshirt senior

Dixon is a redshirt senior safety at Charleston Southern after starting 10 games at strong safety for the Buccaneers in 2025.

The former Rustburg standout recorded 35 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack and two pass breakups last season. He had a career-high six tackles against Coastal Carolina and recorded at least five tackles in four games.

Dixon previously played two seasons at Bryant, where he appeared in 22 games and recorded 29 tackles, an interception and six pass breakups. He began his college career at The Citadel.

At Rustburg, Dixon earned first-team all-district and second-team all-region honors as a senior.

Ari Reid — Virginia Union

Position: Linebacker
Class: Freshman

Reid is a freshman linebacker at Virginia Union after playing at Rustburg.
