Lady Flames punch historic ticket to first-ever NCAA Super Regional Friday vs. Oregon
In one of the biggest upsets in NCAA softball tournament history—and something that hadn’t happened since the Super Regional format was introduced in 2005—Liberty stunned the nation’s No. 1 seed, Texas A&M, with a 6-5-win Sunday night in the decisive game of the Bryan-College Station Regional.
The Lady Flames and Aggies clashed three times over the weekend. Liberty struck first with an 8-5 win on Saturday before falling in an extra-inning slugfest, 14-11, in Sunday’s opener. That set the stage for a do-or-die finale, where Liberty bounced back with resilience and poise to capture the nightcap and punch the program’s first-ever ticket to the NCAA Super Regionals.
In Sunday’s finale, the Flames made the most of their opportunities, scoring six runs on just seven hits, while Texas A&M tallied 12 hits but left 9 runners stranded. Several Liberty players earned praise for their performances, including right fielder Rachel Roupe, who belted two home runs and drove in four runs to lead the offensive charge.

In a year when Texas A&M endured struggles across its major athletic programs—football, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball—the SEC co-champion softball team carried the hopes of Aggie fans. But despite a 48-11 record and top national seed, the Lady Aggies were eliminated in their home regional, becoming the first No. 1 seed to miss the Super Regionals since the format’s inception.
Next, Liberty (50-13) travels west to face No. 16 seed Oregon in a best-of-three Super Regional series beginning Friday 10PM ET in Eugene.
