Despite a 50-foot drop, local pup Winnie survived with only minor scratches and a small skull fracture, thanks to the efforts of the Lynchburg Fire Department.

It was a typical Wednesday evening for Winnie the dog — until about 8:30 p.m.

Her owner let her outside for just a few minutes. Seconds later, she heard Winnie yelp. When she ran into the backyard, she discovered her dog at the bottom of what appeared to be a 50-foot sinkhole that had suddenly opened up.

An old well had collapsed beneath the yard.

Moments earlier, crews with the Lynchburg Fire Department had just cleared a structure fire on Campbell Avenue. Now, they were headed to a very different kind of emergency — a rescue effort to bring Winnie safely back to the surface.
