(Bedford, VA)— The Bedford County Economic Development Authority (EDA) is launching the second year of its Childcare Facilities Grant, continuing its commitment to supporting local childcare providers and expanding access to high-quality childcare in the community.
A total of $30,000 in incentive funding is available this year and may be divided among qualified applicants. The matching grant provides up to $30,000 for capital equipment purchases, infrastructure improvements, or training expenses tied to the creation or expansion of childcare facilities in Bedford County. Priority will be given to projects that demonstrate quality improvements, long-term sustainability, or add new childcare slots to help address the shortage of available childcare in Bedford County. (Please note: this program does not include providers located within the Town of Bedford, which has its own childcare grant program.)
Eligible applicants must be Licensed Providers/Programs through the Commonwealth of Virginia, or the grant must result in the provider achieving licensure. Grant funds must be used for facility modifications or upgrades that comply with childcare licensing standards and/or other related capital investments directly connected to expanding childcare services. (Examples include cribs, playground equipment, or books.)
“Investing in childcare is investing in our workforce and community,” said Matthew Braud, Chairman of the Bedford County EDA. “By supporting the addition of more licensed providers and increasing classroom capacity, this grant directly helps working parents balance family and career, while also giving local businesses the reliable workforce they need to grow. The EDA is proud to continue this effort into its second year, ensuring that Bedford County remains a place where both families and businesses can thrive.”
According to Childcare Aware of Virginia, Bedford County currently has 36 total childcare programs, of which 16 are regulated/licensed. The total licensed capacity across centers, preschools, family childcare homes, and school-age programs is 1,219 children, a figure that falls short of the growing demand from working families.
The program is open to child day centers, family day homes, or family day systems that are registered with the Virginia Department of Education—or will achieve registration through this grant.
Applications open Monday, September 15, 2025, and must be submitted by October 24, 2025. Applications will be reviewed by a committee, with final funding decisions announced in December.
The Bedford County EDA will provide up to $30,000 in 1:1 matching funds on a reimbursement basis for documented, qualifying expenditures. The grant is fully funded by the Bedford County EDA and administered by the Bedford County Office of Economic Development.
