Appomattox, VA — Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) is proud to announce the launch of Welding Technology at its offsite location in Appomattox. This expansion represents a significant step forward in providing hands-on, career-focused education to students across the region.
Thanks to the collaboration of the Central Virginia Planning District Commission (CVPDC), CVCC, and Appomattox County, the college successfully secured GO Virginia and Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission (TRRC) grants to make this project possible. Renovations to the Appomattox Center now support a wide range of programs designed to meet local workforce needs.
Students are now pursuing training in high-demand fields through new course offerings, including Certified Nurse Aid (in partnership with Centra), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced EMT and Welding Technology. In addition, the new welding and fabrication area is equipped with essential tools and welcomed the inaugural class of high school seniors from Appomattox County High School on August 25. Students will work toward earning nationally recognized credentials in NCCER as well as academic career studies certificates (CSC). The Welding program will be offered to adult students beginning Fall 2026.
“The development of a Vocational/Technical Center in Appomattox is a dream that has now become a reality,” said Susan Adams, county administrator for Appomattox. “We are grateful to the many visionary partners who recognized the importance of preparing a workforce that meets today’s technical career demands. This project would not have been possible without the collaborative efforts of the Central Virginia Planning District Commission, GO Virginia, the Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission, local businesses and individuals, the Appomattox County Economic Development Authority, and Appomattox County Public Schools. A special thank you goes to Dr. John Capps and Jason Ferguson of CVCC and Alec Brebner of CVPDC, who dedicated countless hours to the planning, development, and execution of this project.”
Jason Ferguson, associate vice president of workforce development, emphasized the opportunities ahead: “This is an exciting time for Appomattox and the surrounding region. Our mission is to provide accessible, high-quality education that leads directly to meaningful careers. With the support of our partners, this center is now positioned to do just that with the anticipation of expanded course offerings in 2026.”
