The Liberty Lady Flames (1-0) are set to welcome No. 11 Duke (1-0) to Liberty Arena for their 2024-25 home opener on Thursday at 7 p.m.
On Sunday, we got an extra hour of sleep, by Wednesday, we’ll be free from political ads, and by Thursday, Lynchburg fans can witness two of the nation’s best women’s basketball teams go head-to-head. Liberty takes on the 11th-ranked Duke Blue Devils—and you can be there to see it live.
Liberty picked for a second-place conference finish by the CUSA head coaches, handled Valparaiso 77-58 on opening day Monday in the Total Athlete Tip-Off in John Wooden Family Fieldhouse in Xenia, Ohio.
Recently we pointed out that Liberty women’s basketball team is led by a trio of preseason all-conference performers Asia Boone, Emma Hess and Bella Smuda. In Monday's game the trio combined for 41 points with Hess who was playing next door to her high school knocked down 6 three pointers in front of hometown fans. Senior guard Jordan Hodges neared her career high in points by scoring 18 including 3 three pointers and 8 assists.
Coming off a 2023-24 season where it scored a program-record 230 three-pointers, Liberty's 13 triples on Monday fell just one shy of the Lady Flames' single-game record.
Bring on Duke!
Duke brings firepower of their own, defeating Radford 89-36 in their opener. The Blue Devils return four starters, including All-ACC standout Reigan Richardson and Sixth Player of the Year Oluchi Okananwa, are also strengthened by a top 10 recruiting class. Against Radford Duke had six players scoring in double figures despite a modest 20% three-point shooting.
