Sophomore Captures NCAA Corvallis Regional by Three Shots as Flames Fall One Playoff Short of Team National Berth

Liberty sophomore Michael Lugiano is headed to the NCAA Men’s Golf National Championship after capturing the individual title Wednesday at the NCAA Corvallis Regional in Oregon.
Lugiano delivered one of the best performances in program history, finishing at 12-under par 201 (68-66-67) to win the regional championship by three strokes over Oklahoma’s Jase Summy and Clark Van Gaalen.
The Flames standout closed in dramatic fashion, birdieing three of his final four holes — including a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole — helping Liberty force a playoff with San Diego for the fifth and final team berth to the NCAA Championship.
The playoff stretched across holes 9, 10, 11, 17, and 18, with the lowest combined team score advancing. After remaining tied through the opening playoff hole, San Diego ultimately secured the final national championship spot by two strokes, ending Liberty’s hopes of a fifth team appearance at nationals.
Despite the narrow miss, Lugiano’s individual victory earned him a place in next week’s NCAA Men’s Golf National Championship at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California, beginning May 29.
The regional title marks the second collegiate victory for Lugiano, who also won the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate in February 2025.
As a team, Liberty finished at 9-under par 843 (282-280-281) during its 15th NCAA Regional appearance in program history at Trysting Tree Golf Club.
The Flames received key late contributions from seniors Brett Reid and Ike Joy, whose birdies down the stretch helped push Liberty into the playoff opportunity.
The regional also marked the end of the collegiate careers for Reid, Joy, and Josh Ryan — a senior class that helped guide Liberty to Conference USA championships in 2024 and 2026 and three consecutive NCAA Regional appearances.
With the victory, Lugiano also became the first Conference USA golfer since 2013 to win an NCAA Regional individual medal.
