Prices across Greater Lynchburg fell dramatically over the past week, with the City of Lynchburg dropping nearly 70 cents per gallon and several surrounding communities falling below the $4 mark for the first time in weeks.
Gas prices across Central Virginia posted their largest week-to-week decline of the year heading into June, offering welcome relief to motorists after a month of unusually high fuel costs.
According to a Monday afternoon snapshot from GasBuddy, the City of Lynchburg averaged $3.34 per gallon for regular gasoline, down sharply from $4.03 one week ago. Bedford also dipped below the $4 threshold at $3.95, while Appomattox came in at $4.03.
Amherst and Rustburg remained the region's most expensive local markets at $4.29 and $4.27 per gallon, respectively, though both posted significant declines from last week's levels near $5 per gallon.
The sharp drop marks a dramatic turnaround from mid-May, when prices surged above $5 per gallon in parts of Central Virginia and created significant concern heading into the Memorial Day travel period.
Statewide, Alexandria remained Virginia's most expensive market at $4.09 per gallon, while Charlottesville averaged $3.99. Danville, Roanoke, and Virginia Beach each posted averages of $3.73, while Richmond recorded one of the state's lowest major-market averages at $3.41 per gallon.
While the decline is encouraging, fuel prices continue to fluctuate throughout the day at many stations. As always, drivers are encouraged to check GasBuddy immediately before filling up, as individual stations can vary significantly and membership-based retailers often offer prices well below market averages.
