Miller Park Pool Project Moves Into Construction, Remains on Track for Summer 2027

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Construction on Lynchburg’s new Miller Park Pool is expected to begin in September after the city awarded the project’s construction contract to Jamerson-Lewis Construction.

The project remains on schedule for completion in June 2027, with the city planning to have the new pool open for the 2027 summer season.

“This is an ambitious timeline, and our team has been intentional about keeping each phase of the project moving forward with the goal of welcoming the community back to Miller Park Pool for the 2027 summer season,” Lynchburg Parks & Recreation Director Wyatt Woody said.

Plans for the new pool were developed with public input and include 25- and 50-meter lap swimming lanes, multiple water slides, a children’s play area with interactive water features and a sloped entry designed to improve accessibility. The facility will also include shaded seating and gathering areas.

The former Miller Park Pool, built in 1986, had developed significant leaks and was approaching the typical 30- to 50-year lifespan of a public swimming pool. Because of the pool’s condition and uncertainty about soil conditions beneath it, the city determined that replacing the facility was preferable to renovating it.

Lynchburg City Council approved funding for the project in June 2025 as part of the city’s FY 2026-2030 Capital Improvement Program.

Surveying, geotechnical work and utility location followed, with demolition of the former pool completed in February. The city demolished the pool before finalizing the replacement design so crews could evaluate soil and other conditions within the existing pool footprint.

The new pool design was then finalized and reviewed by the city’s Technical Review Committee. The construction project was advertised for competitive bids in June, with the bidding process completed in August and the contract awarded to Jamerson-Lewis Construction.

The city has maintained an accelerated schedule throughout the project in an effort to have the new facility ready for summer 2027. Construction is scheduled to begin in September, with completion targeted for June.
