What stood for many years as a haven for pizza on Bedford Avenue is now a cathedral for tacos.
Open since November 2023, Taco Jesus offers authentic Mexican cuisine in the heart of Lynchburg. My husband and I stopped by for a quick bite and were blown away by the depth of flavor in every dish we tried. As we pulled up to the restaurant, which was recently featured in a documentary about giving new life to old Pizza Hut locations, we smiled at the bright colors and clever greeting on the outdoor sign.

The interior continues the fun, maximalist trend and has an open kitchen that provides diners with a delicious preview of their meal. Taco Jesus’s menu is small, but includes several different options for tacos as well as quesadillas, nachos, and other standbys.

We started with queso fundido, or cheese dip with chorizo and chips. It came out lightning fast and we could smell the spices as it headed to the table. The first bite was a good omen for things to come, with a warm chip topped with creamy cheese punctuated by a pop of smoky spice from the chorizo.

Our main dishes came pretty soon after we got our appetizer, but it felt like the correct pacing, as we were hungry for more. We both ordered sweet potato tacos as well as a zucchini taco, and my husband also got a chorizo quesadilla.
The sweet potato taco was zippy and fresh, with small diced sweet potatoes sauteed and topped with corn and black bean salsa, onion, and cilantro. The corn tortillas tasted homemade and served as the perfect vehicle for the flavorful veggies.
I finished with the zucchini taco and was impressed by the combination of toppings that included grilled zucchini, a flat grilled cheese, and a mango bell pepper salsa. I did add a squeeze of lime that the taco needed to brighten up the flavors a bit.

My husband was a little off put by the amount and level of doneness for the chorizo in his quesadilla. He said it could have been cooked more and there was a little too much meat that ended up overpowering the cheese.

Taco Jesus offers several varieties of homemade sauces with each meal, and we enjoyed the additional heat they added to our plates. Overall, we enjoyed our dinner and will return to sample other dishes because the prices were very reasonable for the freshness, amount, and quality of the food.
