Winter Grip Tightens as Temperatures Stay Below Freezing
Greater Lynchburg witnessed Sunday the grip of a sharp winter chill following the passage of a cold-weather system that brought frigid air and a round of wintry conditions to many parts of the country.
While the storm itself moved through quickly, it left behind a much colder pattern that is expected to linger well into the coming week. Overnight temperatures dipped into the teens, and daytime highs are forecast to remain below freezing for several days, keeping Greater Lynchburg locked in winter mode.

Forecasters are calling for mostly dry conditions through midweek, with sunshine doing little to warm the air. High temperatures are expected to hover in the upper 20s to low 30s, with overnight lows frequently falling into the teens. Winds, while generally light, will add an extra bite during the coldest morning and evening hours.
The one notable exception in the forecast comes Saturday, when a weak system could bring snow showers to parts of Central Virginia. While significant accumulation is not currently expected, even light snowfall could impact travel given the prolonged cold and frozen ground.
Temperatures are forecast to gradually moderate early the following week, with highs climbing back into the mid- to upper-30s and low 40s by midweek. Even so, overnight lows are expected to remain cold, extending the risk of frozen pipes and icy conditions.
Residents are encouraged to take typical cold-weather precautions — protecting exposed plumbing, checking on elderly neighbors, bringing pets indoors, and using caution on untreated roads, especially during early morning hours.
Winter may not be finished with Lynchburg just yet.
