Heritage Park to Close Sept. 1 for Major Renovation

Pickleball courts, skatepark and new play areas among improvements planned before summer 2027 reopening

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Heritage Park will close to the public beginning Tuesday, Sept. 1, as Lynchburg begins a major renovation that will add pickleball courts (14 on map), a skatepark (11 on map), new play areas and other recreational amenities.

The park is expected to remain closed until summer 2027 while construction takes place in phases.

The city awarded the construction contract to Coleman-Adams Construction Inc. Initial work during September and October will include site cleanup and preparation for construction.

Major infrastructure work is scheduled from October through March and will include new athletic field lighting, pathway improvements and tree plantings.

Beginning in January, crews are expected to start installing several of the project's most visible additions, including pickleball courts, a skatepark, multi-generational play areas and an herb garden maze. That work is scheduled to continue into summer 2027.

Construction Timeline:

September–October 2026: Park closes and site cleanup and mobilization begins.

October 2026–March 2027: Major infrastructure improvements (athletic field lighting, pathway upgrades, and tree plantings)

January–Summer 2027: Installation of new features (pickleball courts, a skatepark, multi-generational play areas, and an herb garden maze)

April–Summer 2027: Finalization of the project (new park furniture and signage)

Summer 2027: Heritage Park reopens

New park furniture and signage are expected to be installed during the final phase beginning in April.

According to the city, the improvements are intended to make Heritage Park more accessible while expanding opportunities for recreation, outdoor activities and interaction with nature.

The current construction schedule calls for the park to reopen in summer 2027, although the timeline could change depending on construction progress and conditions.

Lynchburg Parks and Recreation plans to provide updates as work progresses and a reopening date gets closer.
