Lynchburg Regional Airport Receives $5.26 Million FAA Grant for North Apron Development

Federal funding will support infrastructure improvements aimed at attracting future aviation businesses and expanding airport capabilities

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Lynchburg Regional Airport has been awarded $5.26 million in federal funding to support infrastructure improvements that will prepare the airport for future aviation development and private investment.

The $5,258,670 Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG) from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), funded through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), will support the airport’s North Apron Landside Development project. The project will provide the roads, utilities, parking, and other infrastructure needed to support future hangar construction and aviation-related businesses.

The award was announced Tuesday, Aug. 4, as part of the FAA’s eighth round of Fiscal Year 2026 Airport Infrastructure Grant funding. Lynchburg Regional Airport was among 339 airports in 44 states and two U.S. territories selected to receive a portion of the $870 million in federal airport infrastructure investments.

Airport officials said the project will help position Lynchburg Regional Airport for long-term growth by creating development-ready sites for aviation businesses, including potential aircraft maintenance, repair, and other aviation-related operations.

“This award represents an important investment in the future of Lynchburg Regional Airport and the opportunities it creates for our community,” said Cedric Simon, Airport Director. “By building the infrastructure needed for future hangar development, we’re creating opportunities to attract aviation businesses, expand aircraft maintenance and repair operations, and strengthen the airport’s role as a regional economic asset.”

The North Apron Landside Development project will extend landside access to the airport’s existing north apron and includes:

• A new access road from Airport Road
• Parking areas to support future hangar tenants
• Water and sewer utility extensions
• Stormwater management improvements
• Relocation of a portion of the airport’s perimeter fence
• Site preparation for future aircraft hangars and aviation-related development

Project planning is already underway, and the City of Lynchburg has awarded the construction contract to J and M Infrastructure, a Lynchburg-based company.

Once completed, the improvements will create additional opportunities for future build-to-lease hangars and aviation businesses looking to locate at Lynchburg Regional Airport.

“This grant allows us to make strategic infrastructure investments that position Lynchburg for long-term economic growth,” said Wynter C. Benda, City Manager. “By preparing this site for future aviation development, we’re creating opportunities for business investment, job creation, and continued growth at one of our region’s most important transportation assets.”

The FAA’s Airport Infrastructure Grant Program provides funding for projects designed to improve the safety, efficiency, sustainability, and long-term viability of airports nationwide.
