Peaks View Park Completes Sports Lighting Upgrade with Energy-Efficient LED System

New lighting system improves visibility, reduces energy use, and enhances experience for athletes and visitors

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Lynchburg Parks & Recreation has completed a major lighting upgrade at Peaks View Park, replacing decades-old sports lighting systems with a new energy-efficient LED system designed to improve visibility, reduce energy consumption, and minimize light spill into surrounding neighborhoods.

The project installed the Musco Total Light Control–TLC for LED® system on Softball Fields 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7, Multi-Purpose Field 4, the tennis courts, and the park’s new basketball court. While lighting has been installed at the basketball court, nighttime use will begin next spring after pathway and pedestrian access improvements are completed.

The upgraded sports lighting is equipped with Musco’s Control-Link® system, allowing Parks & Recreation staff to remotely schedule and operate lights. The technology improves efficiency, reduces maintenance needs, and provides greater control over facility usage.

Many of the previous lighting systems had been in place for more than 40 years, with some dating back to 1981. The new LED system provides several benefits, including:

• Improved visibility and playability for athletes
• Reduced glare for players and spectators
• Less light spill into nearby neighborhoods
• Increased reliability through modern technology
• Energy savings of more than 50%, with some facilities reducing energy use by up to 80%

The project was completed by Musco Sports Lighting, with installation performed by ICON Electric of Farmville, Virginia.

Peaks View Park is one of Lynchburg’s primary athletic complexes, hosting leagues, tournaments, and community events throughout the year. City officials said the lighting improvements will enhance the experience for athletes and visitors while supporting long-term investments in sustainable public infrastructure.

Park hours vary by facility:

• Athletic fields: Sunrise to 10 p.m. when scheduled games or tournaments are taking place
• Tennis courts: Sunrise to 11 p.m.
• All other park areas: Sunrise to sunset
