Four Perfect Inspections Highlight Week of Mostly Strong Food-Safety Results

Bojangles in Forest topped the violation list with eight findings, while inspectors reported generally positive results across Greater Lynchburg.

The Central Virginia Health District conducted inspections across Greater Lynchburg from May 26 through June 1, including routine inspections, follow-up visits, pre-opening reviews and other regulatory inspections in Lynchburg, Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, Campbell and surrounding localities.

While most establishments posted relatively low violation totals, one restaurant stood out. Bojangles on Forest Road in Forest recorded the week's highest routine inspection total with eight violations. Two establishments earned perfect routine inspections, and the majority of inspections resulted in five or fewer violations.

Inspectors documented several food-safety, sanitation and facility concerns during the inspection.

Among the more significant findings, mac and cheese being reheated for hot holding registered just 89 degrees, well below the required temperature. Employees immediately continued reheating the product, and a follow-up temperature check measured 157 degrees.

Inspectors also found a hand sink blocked by a red bucket in the biscuit preparation area and noted the absence of a handwashing sign in the women's restroom.

A plumbing leak beneath the biscuit-prep hand sink had created conditions that attracted numerous small flies. The moisture buildup and residue accumulation were cited as contributing factors. Management indicated a repair order had already been submitted.

Additional violations included:

• Food residue buildup on storage racks and grill drawer gaskets.
• Leaking plumbing beneath the hand sink.
• An improperly configured hose connection creating a potential backflow risk.
• Unprotected light bulbs above the hot-holding area that lacked shatter-resistant coverings.

Most issues were corrected during the inspection or addressed with corrective action plans.

The downtown restaurant recorded seven violations during a routine inspection.

Inspectors cited missing paper towels at a hand sink, a dishwasher that failed to dispense sanitizer, raw shell eggs being held at 72 degrees near the grill, improperly dated prepared foods, labeling deficiencies on grab-and-go sandwiches, sanitizer concentration issues in wiping-cloth buckets and improper mop storage.

Most violations were corrected on-site during the inspection.
