The downtown Lynchburg gallery will open its 18th annual juried art show and a companion student exhibition Nov. 6, with a ticketed preview Nov. 4.
LYNCHBURG, Va. — Contemporary artists from across the country and young local artists will share the spotlight when Riverviews Artspace opens two exhibitions exploring how historic works of art continue to inspire creativity.
Modern Twist, Riverviews' 18th Annual Juried Show, and Copy Cats, a companion exhibition featuring local students, will open Friday, Nov. 6, at the downtown Lynchburg gallery. Both exhibitions will remain on display through Jan. 10, 2027.
Modern Twist challenges artists to reinterpret works created in 1935 or earlier, bringing contemporary ideas, materials and perspectives to familiar artistic traditions.
The exhibition is juried by Amy Calandra Davis, founder and curator of Findings Art Gallery in Lynchburg. Davis, who has more than 25 years of experience in art and design, selected the works for this year's show.
Awards include a $750 grand prize and portfolio review, $100 Awards of Distinction and a People's Choice Award, which will be announced Dec. 4.
Young artists join the exhibition
The companion exhibition, Copy Cats, features artwork created by young local artists participating in Riverviews' Great Artists workshops.
Students drew inspiration from artists including Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dalí, Henri Matisse and Gustav Klimt, creating their own interpretations of the artists' distinctive styles and techniques.
Together, the exhibitions highlight how artists of different generations draw inspiration from the past while developing their own creative approaches.
