JoJo Pizza Records Week's Highest Violation Total During Greater Lynchburg Food Establishment Inspections

Only two establishments completed routine inspections without violations, but no restaurant recorded more than six violations during the July 14–20 reporting period.

The Central Virginia Health District conducted 16 routine food inspections across Greater Lynchburg during the July 14–20 reporting period. Inspectors also completed 14 follow-up inspections and one pre-opening inspection during the week.

At first glance, the week appears tougher than usual because only two establishments recorded zero violations. A closer look, however, shows the overall findings were relatively moderate. The week's highest violation total was six—well below the eight-, nine- and even double-digit totals that periodically appear in Greater Lynchburg inspection reports.

Among routine inspections, JoJo Pizza in Lynchburg recorded the week's highest violation total with six violations, followed by Bojangles #1040, The Briar Patch in Amherst and Fairmont Crossing Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Amherst with five violations each.

JoJo Pizza — Lynchburg (6 violations)

JoJo Pizza recorded the week's highest violation total during a routine inspection.

Inspectors cited the restaurant for not having a certified food protection manager on staff, missing handwashing reminder signage, unlabeled chemical spray bottles, evidence of rodent activity in an outdoor storage area, uncovered food stored in freezers and a buildup inside the dish machine.

Several issues were corrected during the inspection, including labeling chemical containers and covering food. Management told inspectors they will complete food manager certification, address pest control concerns and improve equipment cleaning.

Bojangles #1040 — Lynchburg (5 violations)

Bojangles #1040 received five violations during its routine inspection.

Inspectors found prepared pinto beans without date labels, employees wearing watches during food preparation, wiping cloths left outside sanitizer buckets, inadequate backflow protection at the mop sink and several facility maintenance issues, including damaged flooring, missing coving and a dumpster without a drain plug.

Several violations were corrected during the inspection, including discarding improperly dated food and removing the hose connection that created the plumbing concern.

The Briar Patch — Amherst (5 violations)

The Briar Patch received five violations during its routine inspection.

Inspectors cited mold and debris inside the ice machine, pangasius fish being sold as catfish, food and food-contact items stored on the floor, wiping cloths not stored in sanitizer solution and grease and dust buildup on equipment and ventilation.

Management told inspectors the menu will be corrected within one month, while the remaining sanitation issues are expected to be addressed through routine cleaning.

Fairmont Crossing Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center — Amherst (5 violations)

Fairmont Crossing Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center received five violations during its routine inspection.

Inspectors observed a leaking drain pipe, grease and food buildup in the convection oven catch pan, a rusted hand sink faucet, damaged wall coving near the dish machine and dirty flooring in one satellite kitchen.

Management discussed ongoing dish machine booster heater issues with inspectors and is expected to complete the necessary repairs.
