Undercover Diner Visits Mister Goodies New Location

Mister Goodies has been a Lynchburg institution for decades, so when word spread that it was opening a second location at Schewels on Timberlake Road earlier this year, there was plenty of excitement. Sure, I was secretly hoping the new spot would land a little closer to Rivermont, downtown or Boonsboro, but a shorter drive than the original Timberlake Road location was still a win in my book.

After church on Sunday, my husband, 10-month-old daughter, my parents, my sister, and I decided it was finally time to check it out. As luck would have it, our first visit happened to fall on National Ice Cream Day, when Mister Goodies was offering buy-one, get-one-free cups, and cones. While most of my family took advantage of the deal, my husband and I had our hearts set on specialty treats that weren't included in the promotion. Since it was our first ice cream outing of the summer, we decided to order exactly what we wanted.

One thing first-time visitor should know — and somehow my husband did not — is that Mister Goodies does not believe in skimpy portions. Even small is enormous. My "small" Cake Batter Brownie Goodies Storm could have easily passed for a medium or even large at most ice cream shops. Thick, creamy vanilla frozen custard was blended with cake batter and chewy brownie pieces, creating a rich dessert without being overwhelmingly sweet.

My husband, blissfully unaware of the legendary serving sizes, confidently ordered a large Hot Fudge Brownie Sundae. I questioned his decision immediately, but he proved me wrong by polishing off every bite. I can see why. The warm brownie paired with hot fudge and creamy frozen custard is hard to beat, especially when the brownie is served fresh and warm enough to melt into the ice cream.

The rest of the table stuck with family favorites. My dad ordered the hand-scooped peach ice cream; his must-have flavor every summer.

My mom chose the White Chocolate Raspberry Truffle; another longtime favorite loaded with generous chunks of raspberry chocolate truffles throughout. The scoop was piled so high it practically spilled over the rim of the cup.

My sister opted for the handmade hard-serve Peanut Butter Cup Oreo.

Our 10-month-old daughter technically ordered a banana, but she made it clear she would rather sample everyone else's ice cream instead. After a few tiny tastes, it's safe to say she's already developing excellent dessert preferences.

The new location itself feels noticeably less hectic than the original, at least during our visit. Despite the National Ice Cream Day promotion, the line moved quickly, parking was easy, and we had no trouble finding a place to sit and enjoy our treats. If you've ever skipped the original location because of long summer lines, the Schewels location may be worth the extra consideration.

As always, the hardest part of visiting Mister Goodies isn't deciding whether to go — it's deciding what to order. I found myself eyeing several menu items for next time, especially the Strawberry Lemonade Gelati and the handmade hard-serve Key Lime ice cream.

The new Schewels location delivers everything Lynchburg loves about Mister Goodies — gigantic portions, creamy frozen custard, generous mix-ins, and family-friendly service — with the bonus of a little less traffic and a little more breathing room. Just remember when they say "small," they don't really mean small.
