The specialty hospital expands inpatient rehabilitation capacity by 150% and becomes the second facility to open on Centra's new Simons Run Medical Campus.
LYNCHBURG, Va. — Centra has officially opened its new Centra Rehabilitation Hospital, a 50-bed specialty facility designed to expand access to advanced inpatient rehabilitation services across Central Virginia.
The hospital celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 9, marking the completion of another major milestone on the Simons Run Medical Campus. The project is a joint venture between Centra and Lifepoint Rehabilitation, a division of Lifepoint Health, and follows the opening of Centra Behavioral Health Hospital last month.
Located at 1159 Simons Run, the new hospital increases Centra's inpatient rehabilitation capacity by 150 percent, helping meet growing demand for specialized recovery services in the region.
"Today marks an exciting milestone for Centra as we complete construction of the Simons Run Medical Campus and celebrate the ribbon cutting of Centra Rehabilitation Hospital," Centra President and CEO Richard Tugman said. "Years of planning have made it possible to bring advanced rehabilitation services to our community, creating a place for both physical recovery and renewed hope for a healthy, productive life."
Designed for Specialized Recovery
The 60,000-square-foot hospital was built specifically for patients recovering from serious injuries, illnesses and surgeries that require intensive rehabilitation before returning home.
Patients treated at the hospital include those recovering from:
- Stroke
- Brain injuries
- Spinal cord injuries
- Neurological disorders
- Orthopedic surgeries
- Amputations
- Other conditions requiring intensive rehabilitation
The hospital features all-private patient rooms and a number of specialized treatment areas, including:
- A 12-bed brain injury unit
- Multiple therapy gyms
- An "activities of daily living" training suite that helps patients regain everyday skills
- Outdoor therapy courtyards designed to encourage movement and recovery

Physical medicine physicians, rehabilitation nurses and therapists provide physical, occupational and speech therapy as part of each patient's treatment plan.
Astrid González Parrilla, CEO of Centra Rehabilitation Hospital, said the new facility is matched by the experience of the team providing care.
"This is a beautiful facility, but more importantly, this is a remarkable team, and I know our rehabilitation professionals are well-prepared to provide the extraordinary care central Virginians deserve."
Partnership Brings National Rehabilitation Expertise
The hospital will be managed by Lifepoint Rehabilitation, which operates more than 50 freestanding rehabilitation hospitals nationwide.
Lifepoint President Russ Bailey said the partnership combines Centra's longstanding commitment to the community with Lifepoint's rehabilitation expertise to provide specialty care closer to home.

Part of Centra's Largest Modernization Effort
The rehabilitation hospital is the second specialty hospital to open on the Simons Run Medical Campus, following the opening of Centra Behavioral Health Hospital in June.
Both facilities are part of Centra's multi-year modernization initiative, the largest facilities and technology investment in the nonprofit health system's nearly 40-year history. In addition to new hospitals, the plan includes infrastructure improvements, expanded specialty care, and investments in digital and artificial intelligence technologies designed to improve patient care.
Why it matters
Until now, Central Virginia has had limited inpatient rehabilitation capacity for patients recovering from life-changing injuries and illnesses. The addition of 50 new rehabilitation beds significantly expands access to specialized care, allowing more patients to complete intensive therapy close to home rather than traveling outside the region.
