Undercover Diner Visits Devils Backbone

My husband and I decided to take a day trip to Nelson County and one of our stops was Devils Backbone. We arrived early, right around opening time, and were seated immediately. We decided to sit outside, and it was a beautiful morning for it. Our table was shaded; there was a nice breeze and the whole setting felt relaxed and peaceful.

One of the things that really stands out about Devils Backbone is the atmosphere. The property is very expansive and feels more like a destination than simply a place to stop for lunch. There is plenty of outdoor space, different areas to explore and lots going on around the property. You could easily spend several hours there enjoying a meal and drinks and walking around afterward. It seems like a wonderful place for families, groups or anyone looking to make an afternoon out of a visit to Nelson County.

For drinks, my husband ordered the Summer Lager, while I got the Citrus Wheat with an orange. Neither was a seasonal beer, but we both enjoyed what we ordered.

We started with the giant pretzel, which truly was huge. It came with a jalapeño-style mustard, but we weren't big fans of it because it was a little too spicy for our taste. We decided to order queso on the side instead, and that was exceptionally good. They gave us a generous amount, and the pretzel was so large that we ended up bringing some of it home.

For my entrée, I ordered the barbecue pulled pork platter, which came with toast, coleslaw and turnip greens. Everything was good, but the turnip greens were the real standout for me—honestly, some of the best I've ever had. The coleslaw was also good, and I had enough pulled pork left over to take some home.

My husband ordered the fish and chips with fries and enjoyed his meal as well.

Overall, this was an enjoyable visit. We were seated quickly, the outdoor setting was especially pleasant and the portions were generous. The food had several highlights, especially the turnip greens, but the atmosphere and overall property are a big part of what makes Devils Backbone worth visiting. It's the kind of place where you can have lunch and a beer, but you can also stay awhile and enjoy everything around you.
