Horizon Behavioral Health and the Lynchburg Humane Society team up for “Adopt Wellness” initiative
Lynchburg, VA — A new partnership between Horizon Behavioral Health and the Lynchburg Humane Society is putting a spotlight on the connection between mental health and pet ownership during Mental Health Awareness Month.
The month-long initiative, called “Adopt Wellness,” will focus on the role pets can play in improving overall well-being, while also connecting the community with mental health resources and information.
Research continues to show that pet ownership can have measurable benefits, including reduced stress levels, lower blood pressure, decreased loneliness, and stronger feelings of social connection.
Throughout May, visitors to the Lynchburg Humane Society’s Center for Pets at 1211 Old Graves Mill Road will find information and opportunities to engage with Horizon Behavioral Health staff.
What to Expect
Horizon Behavioral Health will have a continuous informational presence in the lobby throughout the month, along with several dates where staff will be on-site to speak directly with visitors:
- Friday, May 1 | 12:00–3:00 p.m.
- Saturday, May 9 | 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
- Saturday, May 23 | 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
In addition, a special “Adopt Wellness” adoption event is scheduled for May 22–24, with more details expected closer to the event.
The partnership is rooted in a shared belief that well-being extends beyond traditional care.
“At the Lynchburg Humane Society, we truly believe that helping people and helping pets go hand-in-hand,” said Claire LeFew, Development and Communications Manager. “We’re excited to partner with Horizon Behavioral Health to highlight the health benefits of pet ownership and provide resources to our community.”
Ryan Weaks, Director of Communications and Community Engagement at Horizon Behavioral Health, said the effort aligns closely with the organization’s broader mission.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to meeting people where they are and supporting whole-person wellness,” Weaks said. “Connection, care, and belonging are at the heart of both mental health and the human-animal bond.”
