“Modern Twist” exhibition asks artists to reinterpret works from art history through a contemporary lens
LYNCHBURG, Va. — Riverviews Artspace has extended the deadline to Saturday, Sept. 19, for artists to submit work for its 18th Annual Juried Show, “Modern Twist.”
The exhibition challenges artists to select a specific work by a recognized artist from 1935 or earlier and reinterpret it from a contemporary perspective. Entries may respond to the original work through subject matter, materials, concept or artistic approach.
The competition is open to U.S.-based artists age 18 and older, with all artistic media considered. Artists may submit up to three works for a $40 entry fee. Click here for Application information.
Each submission must identify the historical work and artist that inspired it and include a brief statement explaining the artist’s creative intentions. Submitted artwork must be original, have been created within the past three years and be available for sale. Work previously exhibited in the Lynchburg region is not eligible, and AI-generated artwork will not be accepted.
The show will be juried by Amy Calandra Davis, founder and curator of Findings Art Gallery in Lynchburg. Davis has more than 25 years of experience in art and design and founded Findings Art in 2020. Her original work has been featured at Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus and placed in galleries and private collections across the country.

The Grand Prize winner will receive $750 and a portfolio review with Davis. Awards of Distinction will include $100 cash prizes, and a People’s Choice Award will also be presented.
Entries must be submitted online through CaFÉ by 11:59 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19. Selected artists will be notified on or before Oct. 10.
The exhibition will run Nov. 6 through Jan. 10 at Riverviews Artspace. An opening reception is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, followed by a juror’s talk and awards presentation at 6 p.m.
The People’s Choice Award will be announced Dec. 4.
