Undercover Diner Visits The Dahlia

Finding a restaurant that serves great food and works well for dining with a baby isn't always easy. When my husband and I met friends for dinner at The Dahlia, we wanted somewhere with highchairs, a welcoming atmosphere and food we knew we would enjoy. Once again, The Dahlia checked every box.

The four adults and our two young daughters were seated upstairs, where the girls sat next to each other and happily entertained one another throughout the meal. It ended up being one of the best restaurant experiences we've had with our daughter. Instead of getting restless, she was content the entire evening, allowing the adults to enjoy dinner and conversation.

We also happened to arrive during happy hour, which made for a great start to the meal. We ordered the Cajun Krab Dip with Old Bay Crisps, one of my favorite appetizers there. Normally $11, it was just $6 during happy hour, making it an easy choice. The warm, creamy dip paired perfectly with the seasoned crisps and remains a must-order every time I visit.

With summer in full swing, I opted for The Dahlia's Signature Tacos with cod. The flour tortillas are filled with lime-dressed cabbage, tomatoes, corn, red onion, and fresh cilantro and are served with Cajun fries and chipotle cream sauce. I substituted sweet potato fries so my daughter could share them, and I'm glad I did. They were crisp on the outside, soft inside, and some of the best sweet potato fries in Lynchburg. They easily edged out others I've had around town.

The tacos themselves were fresh, filling and packed with flavor. The seasoning carries a noticeable kick, so diners who shy away from spice should know they are not completely mild, though they stop well short of being overwhelmingly hot.

My husband and our friend both ordered the evening's special: swordfish tacos prepared in the same style as my cod tacos. Both agreed the flavor was excellent, but each wished there had been a bit more swordfish. Given that swordfish isn't something you find on many menus, they figured the kitchen was stretching a limited supply.

Our friend chose the Pair Flat Irons, marinated in Jameson Irish Whiskey, and served with mashed potatoes and broccoli. She generously shared a bite of the steak, which was cooked perfectly to a medium rare with a flavorful marinade that complemented the beef without overpowering it. The mashed potatoes were equally impressive—rich, creamy and among the best I've had at a local restaurant.

Service was another highlight of the evening. The staff was warm, attentive, and efficient without ever making us feel rushed. Drinks stayed full, food arrived promptly and everyone we interacted with was genuinely friendly.

The Dahlia has long been one of our favorite restaurants in Lynchburg, and this visit only reinforced why. The cozy atmosphere, consistently good food, attentive service, and family-friendly environment make it an easy recommendation whether you are planning a date night, dinner with friends or a meal with little ones in tow.
